The excerpt below was taken from the section titled “Nuestro Saludo” or “Our Greeting” from the first publication of Puerto Rico Evangélico. This introduction was written by the editors of the newspaper, Arturo Salguero, Julio D. Ramu, and Tomas M. Corson. As the excerpt explains, this publication is an evangelical newspaper that is intended to bring news of evangelical importance to Puerto Rican readers. The newspaper is published entirely in Spanish which means it was written by and intended for a Puerto Rican audience. This is what makes this source most interesting. The source does not mention the United States or American institutions as advancers of Protestantism on the island, but instead thanks a number of different churches and their publication as being a forerunner of Puerto Rico Evangélico.
This source is significant because it was created and consumed by Puerto Ricans, presumably without the help or interference of American missionaries. Additionally, this source being written in Spanish goes directly against the Americanization campaign put into motion by the United States government. This shows how Puerto Ricans were able to adopt and utilize Protestantism for themselves, separate from American goals.
“It gives us great pleasure to present to the evangelical people of Puerto Rico as well as well to the general public the first number of Puerto Rico Evangélico. This new newspaper, which comes to replace El Testigo Evangelico and La Voz Evangélica, which for some years have been providing valuable services to the evangelical cause, is the official organ of the Presbyterian, Congregational, and Her United hands in Christ. But the purpose of Puerto Rico Evangélico is not only to be return to the aforementioned churches, but to render a true service to the evangelization of our Island. These three denominations are the owners of the newspaper company, but cooperation has been sought from the other denominations that do not have newspapers, and such a cordial welcome has had the idea that Puerto Rico Evangélico already has the cooperation of the denominations that represent fifty-two percent of the island evangelicals.” (Page 1)
